Weston Building Complex Refurbishment Work Under Way

28th of July 2008
The Weston Building, acquired by the Opal Property Group from the University of Manchester under a stock transfer agreement in July 2007, is benefitting from a significant investment with a programme of refurbishment. The Weston Building opened in 1992 and has since established itself as a popular hall in the student community and as Manchester Conference Centre, attracting many corporate clients.

The refurbishment incorporates three main elements of work. A major proportion of the programme focuses on the upgrade of 82 of the 117 hotel bedrooms, which since 2004 have operated under the Days Hotel franchise.  The refurbishment is anticipated to be completed in late September 2008, ready for the busy Autumn conference season.

Opal are completing the final phase of a refurbishment programme of Weston Hall, started by the University, of 8 lounge/kitchens.  These are due for completion before the start of the next term. Furthermore, Opal will upgrade the data cabling to all of the 529 en-suite bedrooms from Cat 3 to Cat 5 to maximise service to hotel guests and students.

Manchester Conference Centre is a purpose built, modern city centre conferencing centre comprising of 23 flexible meeting spaces from lecture theatres to syndicate rooms.  It is situated in an unrivalled location in Manchester city centre, a five minute walk from the Manchester Piccadilly rail station.  The Manchester Conference Centre name will remain, but the brand will be updated and a new website will be launched.

Chandos Hall student residence located on the University City Centre campus was also acquired as part of the same stock transfer.

It is the latest development in a long term relationship with the University of Manchester; the first lease was signed in 1990 for the popular Hulme Hall student residence.
